entrainment

Cycles locking together

Entrainment is the process of being drawn into a flow or rhythm.

In physics, particles become entrained when carried along by moving fluid or air: Sediment entrainment occurs when river currents pick up debris.

In biology and psychology, entrainment describes synchronization—brain waves entraining to external stimuli, circadian rhythms entraining to light cycles, or one person's breathing pattern unconsciously matching another's.

The word captures both physical transport and rhythmic alignment.
