brainwaves
Electrical mental activity
Brainwaves are the electrical impulses produced by brain activity, measurable by electroencephalography.
Different frequencies correspond to different mental states—delta waves during deep sleep, beta waves during alert concentration.
In casual use, a brainwave is a sudden clever idea: I had a brainwave about how to fix the problem.
