banderole

Small ornamental banner

A banderole is a long, narrow flag or streamer, typically forked at the end, attached to a lance, mast, or trumpet.

In art and architecture, banderole refers to a ribbon-like scroll bearing an inscription, often seen in medieval and Renaissance paintings unfurling from figures' mouths or hands: The angel held a banderole reading "Gloria in Excelsis Deo".

Also spelled banderol or bannerol.
