standard-bearer
Cause's leading figure
A standard-bearer originally carried a flag or banner (a standard) into battle—a position of honor and danger.
Now the term is almost entirely figurative: a standard-bearer is someone who leads or represents a cause, movement, or group.
She became the standard-bearer for progressive reform.
The party's presidential nominee is typically called its standard-bearer.
