emitter

Transistor's output terminal

An emitter is something that sends out or releases—light, sound, radiation, particles, or signals.

The term appears most often in technical contexts: a radio emitter broadcasts signals, a carbon emitter releases greenhouse gases, an infrared emitter produces heat.

In electronics, the emitter is one of three terminals on a transistor.

The factory is a major emitter of pollutants.
