civil engineering
Public works discipline
Civil engineering is the branch of engineering concerned with the design, construction, and maintenance of public infrastructure—roads, bridges, dams, tunnels, water systems, and buildings.
It's distinguished from military engineering, which historically focused on fortifications and warfare.
A civil engineer might oversee highway construction or design a city's sewage system.
