gravel pits
Stone extraction sites
Gravel pits are excavations where gravel and sand are extracted for construction materials.
The mining creates depressions that often fill with water after operations cease, becoming lakes used for swimming, fishing, or wildlife habitat: We used to swim at the old gravel pits outside town.
The term can refer to active quarries or their abandoned remains.
