culverts

Underground water passages

Culverts is the plural of culvert, a tunnel or pipe that channels water under a road, railroad, or embankment.

Culverts prevent flooding by allowing streams or drainage to pass beneath infrastructure rather than over it: The culverts under the highway backed up during the storm.

They range from small concrete pipes to large corrugated metal tunnels.
