riprap

Shoreline stone protection

Riprap is loose stone or rubble used to form a foundation or protect an embankment from erosion.

It lines riverbanks, shorelines, and bridge supports where water would otherwise wash away soil: The engineers laid riprap along the channel to prevent flooding damage.

As a verb, to riprap is to reinforce with such material.
