railbed

Gravel under tracks

The railbed is the foundation on which railroad tracks are laid—the prepared surface of gravel, crushed stone, and compacted earth that supports the ties and rails.

The term also refers to abandoned railroad corridors, often converted to trails: The old railbed makes a great hiking path.

Also called roadbed.
