elementals

Fire, water, air, earth

Elementals are supernatural beings embodying or inhabiting natural forces—earth, air, fire, and water.

The concept comes from Renaissance occult philosophy, which assigned spirits to each element: gnomes to earth, sylphs to air, salamanders to fire, undines to water.

The term appears frequently in fantasy fiction and games, where elementals are creatures summoned or encountered as manifestations of raw elemental power: The wizard conjured a fire elemental to guard the passage.
