chimeras

Fire-breathing hybrid monsters

Chimeras are creatures composed of parts from different animals—in Greek mythology, a fire-breathing monster with a lion's head, goat's body, and serpent's tail.

The word now applies to any hybrid or fantastical combination: genetic chimeras, architectural chimeras.

More broadly, a chimera is an illusion or impossible fancy: His dreams of wealth proved to be chimeras.

In biology, a chimera is an organism containing cells from two distinct genetic sources.
