djinn

Lamp-dwelling supernatural being

A djinn is a supernatural being in Islamic and Arabian mythology—a spirit created from smokeless fire, capable of appearing in human or animal form.

Djinn (also spelled jinn or genie) can be benevolent, malevolent, or neutral, and feature prominently in folklore and the Quran.

The anglicized "genie" derives from this word, though Western genies—wish-granting lamp-dwellers—represent a simplified version of the richer Islamic tradition.
