weeds
Unwanted yard plants
Weeds are plants growing where they're not wanted—in gardens, lawns, or fields, competing with cultivated plants for resources.
The word extends to anything unwelcome that spreads aggressively: Misinformation is a weed in public discourse.
To weed is to remove unwanted plants, or figuratively to eliminate undesirables: weed out the underperformers.
In the plural, weeds can mean widow's mourning clothes, now archaic: She wore her weeds for a year.
In the weeds means overwhelmed or mired in details, from restaurant slang for a server who's fallen behind.
