diving bell

Underwater air compartment

A diving bell is a rigid chamber, open at the bottom, lowered into water to allow divers to breathe and work underwater.

Air trapped inside keeps water from flooding the chamber.

The device was an early method of underwater exploration before modern diving suits and submarines.

They descended in a diving bell to examine the shipwreck.
