bathysphere

Tethered diving sphere

A bathysphere is a spherical deep-sea diving chamber, lowered by cable from a ship to observe ocean depths unreachable by divers.

The thick steel sphere with small portholes was used for early deep-sea exploration in the 1930s, descending thousands of feet.

The term now evokes a dated, almost quaint era of underwater discovery, largely superseded by submersibles that can maneuver independently.
