zeppelin

Gas-filled flying cigar

A zeppelin is a large rigid airship with a cigar-shaped body, named after its German inventor Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin.

The design featured a metal framework containing multiple gas cells, unlike simpler blimps.

Zeppelins were used for passenger travel and military bombing in the early twentieth century before the Hindenburg disaster ended the era: The zeppelin floated silently over the city. (Capitalized Zeppelin refers to the inventor or the rock band.)
