decompression chamber

Diver recovery room

A decompression chamber is a sealed enclosure where pressure can be gradually reduced, allowing divers or workers who have been in high-pressure environments to return safely to normal atmospheric pressure.

The slow adjustment prevents decompression sickness—nitrogen bubbles forming painfully in blood and tissues.

Hyperbaric chambers work similarly but in reverse, increasing pressure to treat conditions like carbon monoxide poisoning.
