bathyscaphe

Deep-sea diving vessel

A bathyscaphe is a self-propelled deep-sea submersible designed to reach extreme ocean depths.

Unlike submarines, it uses a float chamber filled with gasoline for buoyancy and drops iron ballast to descend or ascend.

The bathyscaphe *Trieste* carried two men to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in 1960—the deepest point in any ocean.
