airship
Steerable floating vessel
An airship is a large aircraft that stays aloft through buoyancy rather than aerodynamic lift—essentially a steerable balloon.
Unlike unpowered balloons, airships have engines and can be directed: The airship floated over the stadium.
The rigid type with an internal frame was called a zeppelin.
Airships dominated early aviation but largely disappeared after the Hindenburg disaster in 1937.
