diking

Building flood barriers

Diking is the construction or maintenance of dikes—embankments built to control water, prevent flooding, or reclaim land from the sea.

The Netherlands is famous for its diking, having reclaimed much of its territory from water over centuries.

The word also applies to creating drainage channels or ditches.

In geology, diking refers to the formation or intrusion of dikes—sheets of igneous rock that cut through existing rock layers.
