groyne

Shore erosion preventer

A groyne is a low wall or barrier built perpendicular to a shoreline, extending into the water to reduce erosion by trapping sand and slowing the movement of sediment along the coast.

Groynes are typically made of wood, stone, or concrete and appear in series along beaches.

The spelling is British; Americans usually write *groin* for both this structure and the body part.
