damage control

Limiting the fallout

Damage control is action taken to limit harm after something has gone wrong.

The term comes from naval operations—containing flooding or fire on a ship—but now applies broadly to managing fallout from any crisis.

In public relations, damage control means minimizing reputational harm: The press conference was pure damage control after the leaked emails.
