overpressure

Beyond ambient pressure

Overpressure is pressure exceeding normal atmospheric levels, especially the sudden pressure wave from an explosion.

In military and engineering contexts, it describes the destructive force that radiates outward from a blast: The overpressure from the bomb shattered windows a mile away.

The term also applies in diving and aerospace to dangerous pressure differentials.
