intellectualization
Thinking away feelings
Intellectualization is the practice of analyzing something in abstract, rational terms rather than engaging with it emotionally.
In psychology, it's a defense mechanism—turning feelings into ideas to avoid distress: His intellectualization of grief kept him from truly processing his father's death.
More broadly, to intellectualize is to overthink what might be better felt or simply experienced.
