foiling
Preventing a plan
Foiling is the act of thwarting or preventing something from succeeding: The detective kept foiling the villain's schemes.
The phrase Curses, foiled again! has become a theatrical cliché for frustrated antagonists.
Separately, foiling refers to applying thin metal sheets as decoration or backing, or in sailing and water sports, riding above the water on a hydrofoil.
