Southern blot

Membrane hybridization technique

A Southern blot is a laboratory technique for detecting specific DNA sequences.

DNA fragments are separated by size, transferred to a membrane, and identified using a labeled probe that binds to the target sequence.

Named after biologist Edwin Southern, the technique inspired the names of related methods: Northern blots (for RNA) and Western blots (for proteins).
