mosaicism
Mixed cell populations
Mosaicism is a condition in which an organism has cells with different genetic compositions—some cells carry a mutation while others don't.
It arises when a genetic change occurs after fertilization, so only cells descended from the altered cell show the difference.
The patient's mosaicism explained why her symptoms were milder than typical cases.
The term comes from the patchwork appearance of mosaic art.
