overexpression
Cranked up production
Overexpression is the production of a gene product—usually a protein—at abnormally high levels.
The term belongs to molecular biology and genetics, where researchers may deliberately overexpress a gene to study its function: Overexpression of the oncogene led to tumor formation in mice.
In disease contexts, overexpression often indicates pathology: HER2 overexpression is associated with aggressive breast cancers.
