clinometer

Angle-measuring survey tool

A clinometer is an instrument for measuring angles of slope or inclination—the tilt of a surface relative to horizontal or vertical.

Surveyors use clinometers to measure terrain grade, geologists to measure rock strata, and foresters to estimate tree height by measuring the angle to the top: She sighted through the clinometer and read twelve degrees.
