spirit level
Carpenter's bubble gauge
A spirit level is a tool for checking whether a surface is perfectly horizontal or vertical.
It contains a sealed glass tube with liquid and an air bubble; when the bubble centers between two marks, the surface is level.
The spirit refers to the alcohol solution inside, which won't freeze in cold conditions.
He checked the shelf with a spirit level before mounting it.
