nuclear membrane

Nucleus boundary layer

The nuclear membrane is the double-layered barrier surrounding a cell's nucleus, separating genetic material from the cytoplasm.

Also called the nuclear envelope, it controls what enters and exits the nucleus through tiny pores: The nuclear membrane breaks down during cell division.

The membrane reassembles after chromosomes separate.
