cotyledons

First leaves emerge

Cotyledons are the first leaves to emerge from a germinating seed, also called seed leaves.

They look different from the plant's later true leaves and often contain stored nutrients that fuel early growth.

Flowering plants divide into monocots (one cotyledon) and dicots (two cotyledons): The cotyledons had yellowed and fallen off by the time the tomato developed its first true leaves.
