sheath

Covering for cutlery

A sheath is a close-fitting cover, especially one that protects a blade: He slid the knife back into its sheath.

The word extends to any snug protective covering—the insulating material around a wire, the membrane surrounding a muscle fiber, or a form-fitting dress.

To sheathe is to enclose in a sheath; to unsheathe is to draw out.
