charnel house
Where corpses rest
A charnel house is a building or vault where bones or corpses are deposited.
Historically, when churchyard graves were reused, the exhumed remains went to a charnel house.
The term now serves mostly as a grim metaphor for any place of death and carnage: The battlefield had become a charnel house.
