catacombs
Subterranean burial tunnels
Catacombs are underground passages or tunnels containing graves or burial chambers, typically cut into rock.
The term comes from the subterranean cemeteries beneath Rome where early Christians buried their dead.
By extension, catacombs can describe any network of underground tunnels or chambers, even without burials: We explored the catacombs beneath the old city.
The word usually appears in plural form.
