burial vault
Stone interment chamber
A burial vault is a lined, sealed container placed in a grave to enclose a casket, preventing the ground above from sinking as the casket deteriorates.
Most American cemeteries require them for maintenance purposes.
The term also refers to an above-ground chamber or crypt for storing remains: The family burial vault held three generations.
