canopic jars

Egyptian organ containers

Canopic jars are containers used in ancient Egyptian burial practice to hold the internal organs removed during mummification.

A set of four jars preserved the stomach, intestines, lungs, and liver, each protected by a different deity.

The lids were often shaped as human or animal heads: The canopic jars were arranged beside the sarcophagus.
