scarab

Nile Valley beetle

A scarab is a beetle, especially the dung beetle sacred to ancient Egyptians, who saw its ball-rolling as a symbol of the sun's daily journey.

The word now usually refers to carved representations of the beetle used as amulets, seals, or jewelry: a scarab ring, an Egyptian scarab pendant.

Scarabs remain popular in decorative arts.
