water line
Ship's load indicator
A water line is the level to which water rises on a surface—especially the mark on a ship's hull indicating how deep it sits in the water.
A ship loaded with cargo rides lower, its water line higher on the hull.
The term also means a pipe that supplies water: The plumber had to replace the water line to the house.
