superimposition

Stacking images together

Superimposition is the act of placing one thing on top of another so both remain partially visible.

In photography and film, images are superimposed to create composite effects—a ghost appearing translucent against a background, or text floating over a scene.

The term extends to any layering where elements occupy the same space: the superimposition of modern buildings on a medieval street plan.
