macroalgae

Visible aquatic plants

Macroalgae are large, visible algae that grow in marine and freshwater environments, commonly known as seaweed or kelp.

Unlike microalgae, which are microscopic single-celled organisms, macroalgae are multicellular and can range from a few centimeters to over fifty meters in length.

They attach to rocks, coral, or other substrates and are classified into three main groups based on pigmentation: green, brown, and red algae.

The coastline was thick with macroalgae after the storm.
