metric tons

Mass in megagrams

A metric ton is a unit of mass equal to 1,000 kilograms, or about 2,205 pounds.

It's the standard ton in most of the world and in scientific contexts, distinguished from the US short ton (2,000 pounds) and the British long ton (2,240 pounds).

Often spelled *tonne* to avoid confusion: The ship carries 50,000 metric tons of grain.
