juggernaut
Unstoppable destructive power
A juggernaut is an overwhelming, unstoppable force that crushes whatever stands in its path.
The word comes from a Hindu festival where a massive cart carrying an image of the god Jagannath was pulled through streets—Western observers mythologized devotees throwing themselves beneath its wheels.
Now juggernaut describes any massive, relentless entity: The team became a juggernaut in the second half of the season, a corporate juggernaut, a juggernaut of public opinion.
