The Blob

The Blob is a 1958 science fiction horror film featuring an amorphous alien creature that consumes everything in its path, growing larger with each victim.

The title has become shorthand for any shapeless, expanding mass that threatens to engulf or absorb: The project became a blob, swallowing every department's budget.

Someone called a blob is formless or inert—lying around like an undifferentiated lump: I spent Sunday being a blob on the couch.
