barleycorn

Single malt source

A barleycorn is a grain of barley.

Historically, the barleycorn served as a unit of length—one-third of an inch—still used in British and American shoe sizing, where three barleycorn equal one size.

John Barleycorn is a personification of barley and, by extension, of beer and whiskey made from it.
