hops

Bitter ale ingredient

Hops are the dried flowers of a climbing plant, used to add bitterness and aroma to beer: The brewer added more hops for a citrusy finish.

Before hops became standard in brewing, beer was often sweet and spoiled quickly.

The plant itself is also called hops.

Separately, hops is the plural of hop—a small jump or a short trip: It's just a few hops to get there.
