metric units

Kilometers and grams

Metric units are the standardized measurements of the International System—meters for length, grams for mass, liters for volume, and so on.

The system uses decimal prefixes (kilo-, centi-, milli-) to scale units up or down, making conversions straightforward: The recipe calls for 500 milliliters of milk.

Most of the world uses metric units; the United States remains a notable holdout.
