bandwagon

Crowd-following phenomenon

A bandwagon was originally a wagon carrying a band in a parade—something people literally jumped onto.

Now it's almost always figurative: to jump on the bandwagon or climb aboard the bandwagon is to join a popular movement or trend, often opportunistically.

The bandwagon effect describes how popularity breeds more popularity, as people follow what others are doing.
