bald cypress

Kneed swamp tree

Bald cypress is a large deciduous conifer native to swamps and wetlands of the southeastern United States.

Unlike most conifers, it sheds its needles in fall—hence "bald." The trees are known for their distinctive "knees," woody projections that rise from the roots in standing water.

Bald cypress wood resists rot and is valued for outdoor construction.
